They wanted to give my son drugs because he was hyperactive....

My son DJ was into everything. What I
would call a real boy. Curious, inquisitive
and to be quite honest, destructive.

This bothered his teachers to no end. He
simply would not conform to his environment.
When he was about 10,he went with me to a
restaurant in Florida to meet a friend who is
a school psychologist.

DJ would not keep still, He kept getting up
and walking around the restaurant ....
touching everything.

My friend said "this boy has a classic
of ADDH. If I were you I would put him on
some drugs."

I had heard this before from a number of
"experts" and non experts alike ....

(Now don't get me wrong, some kids do
need to be medicated, but MANY do not.)

===========
I DECIDED TO USE THE JUDO
SCHOOL AS MEDICINE INSTEAD OF
JUST AS RECREATION
===========

I increased DJ's participation in the Judo
and would not let him quit. I decided to
MAKE him increase his involvement in one
thing instead of allowing him to do so many
different activities.

You see I had taught a number of kids like DJ
in my 25 years as an instructor and I KNOW
that many people overreact to hyperactive
kids.

Today DJ is a 3rd year University student at
one of the world's top engineering schools,
a caring compassionate individual and a world
class athlete. He is the team captain for
Bahamas Judo.

  1. Thank you for this post "Sensei"! It is really difficult to have kids in the first place, but when your kid is diagnosed with something like ADDH most parents start to panic and look frantically for answers. There are no easy answers, but there are a whole lot of people called doctors who will tell you to medicate your child. I am not against all medication (as you mentioned in you post too), but we have to be judicious and follow our hearts as parents. Not always so easy when it seems like all the "experts" are trying to convince you to do something that does not seem right. You may find yourself feeling guilty because you don't do what the doctor tells you to do, or think that you are crazy because you have a feeling something else may be better for your child. I applaud your courage, your wisdom, and your extremely hard work in helping your son become the wonderful man I am sure he is now. Thanks for the inspiration (again!)
